What does Heart Heroes involve?

According to the Belgian Healthcare Knowledge Centre (KCE), 10 athletes below the age of 25 die of heart failure every year. And yet, if a defibrillator is used correctly, numerous lives can be saved. The Ladbrokes Foundation is launching a major awareness and training campaign in Belgium's amateur sports clubs in order to familiarise as many athletes as possible with the correct way to use a defibrillator.
•Training : The ambitious aim is to train 5 to 12 people per club. HEART HEROES courses are held in 3 hours and are given by specially trained professionals. They are aimed at everyone, from the moment people actively join the club in its day-to-day business – as well as at non-participating family members and friends among the spectators.
• Awareness : Signposting is set up in the club premises in order to clearly indicate the defibrillator’s location and thereby answer a question that is heard too often: “where is it? ”. Moreover, each club will be awarded an ad hoc certificate, and will be given sportswear etc. advertising the HEART HEROES. An invitation to club members and friends to become HEART HEROES, along with an explanatory brochure, will also be provided to every participating club.

How far does that commit your sports club?

The sports club just needs to indicate its interest in the campaign and undertake to put forward 5 to 12 volunteers to take the training, which will be provided at the club. It must also commit to checking that its defibrillator is working correctly on a regular basis.

What does the training involve?

The training meets medical requirements under the supervision of Doctor Brugada. A certified training provider will briefly outline the theory before moving on to practical simulation exercises. Training is completed in 2 or 3 hours. The Ladbrokes Foundation will supply sweatshirts, armbands, etc. advertising the HEART HEROES.

How much does the community/club pay?

It costs nothing for the club. Expenditure for the training, signposting and visual equipment (sweatshirt and armbands) is taken care of by the Ladbrokes Foundation. At the end of the training, a ceremony will be held to hand out certificates in partnership with local councillors and the regional press.
